Specifi’s built environment ‘tech-talk’ events are back for 2024 and three of the Keystone Group Steel Division brands have secured spots at several locations throughout the series.

The series of architecture ‘tech-talk’ events bring together architects and industry experts to discuss the latest challenges and trends within the industry. Attendees are allocated 10 minutes with each industry expert to find out more about their products and services.

EVENTS | KEYSTONE LIVE VISITS IRELAND

This month, Keystone Group, the UK’s largest steel lintel manufacturer and Europe’s fastest growing roof window manufacturer, is to hit the road to share ideas and innovations that are core to supporting fabric first construction and achieving net zero.

‘Keystone Live’ will visit venues in three cities across Ireland. It features a series of free, insightful live webinar debates as part of a four-hour CPD experience. Leading discussions will be a stellar cast of industry speakers with the passion and knowhow to deliver thought-provoking views on topics including offsite construction, provision of net zero housing, designing with non-combustible and how the industry is tackling climate change.

Ciaran McAliskey, Keystone’s Specification Manager, said: “We cannot wait to take the Keystone Live show on the road. For audiences, it’s not only a chance to learn about products that are designed to facilitate a low carbon approach to construction, it will look at behaviours the industry needs to adopt to achieve net zero. Therefore, whatever your supply chain sector, this is an event not to be missed.”

Keystone Live is a fact-packed morning-only event. Each attendee will receive a certificate upon completing the programme that contains an in-depth reveal of Keystone Group products specifically developed with net zero and building regulation compliance in mind. They include a look at the Keystone Lintels thermally efficient Hi-therm Lintel and its low psi value, IG Masonry Support’s A1 Fire Rated Brick Slip System, Keyfix’s Non-Combustible Cavity Tray systems and also the patented Thermal Collar on the Keylite Roof Window, bringing events to a fitting conclusion.

Tea, coffee and other light refreshments will be available throughout the morning, which will be followed by a leisurely network lunch where d the conversational cut-and-thrust will continue.

NEWS | Swift Brickwork apprentices gain inspiration and tools to kick-start career

IG Masonry Support and the wider Keystone Group steel division have joined forces with other key influencers in the construction sector to provide a day of inspiration for Swift Brickwork Contractor‘s new cohort of brickwork apprentices.

The highlight of the day was a tour of a live site managed by the prestigious Canary Wharf Group. The apprentices had the opportunity to witness first-hand the intricacies of brickwork in a real-world setting. From observing skilled craftsmen at work to understanding the importance of precision and attention to detail, the apprentices were able to gain valuable insights into the profession.

In addition to the site tour, Keystone Group companies IG Masonry Support and Keyfix also provided product demonstrations to showcase the latest advancements in brickwork technology. The apprentices were able to witness the market-leading technology and techniques used in the industry, providing them with a glimpse into the future of their trade.

To ensure the apprentices had the best start to their apprenticeship, the Keystone Group companies generously provided them with a full bag of brickwork tools. This gesture was made possible by the Group’s Keyskills Education Initiative which aims to equip brickwork apprentices with the necessary knowledge and tools to excel in their training and future careers.

Dean Degun, Swift Brickwork’s Contracts Manager and the driving force behind the event, expressed his gratitude to all participants: “We were delighted to hold an inspiration day for our new cohort of apprentices at Canary Wharf Group. The event has been supported by many key influencers within the sector including Canary Wharf Group, IG Masonry Support, Keyfix, the wider Keystone Group, New City College, Brick Development Association, Band of Builders, and the Association of Brickwork Contractors. We are ever so grateful for the donation of the brickwork tools from the Keystone Group for all of the apprentices.”

Andy Neal, Managing Director of IG Masonry Support who also attended the day, said: “It was a pleasure to be a part of the Apprentice Inspiration Day and we thank Swift Brickwork Contractors for including us. Witnessing the enthusiasm and dedication of these apprentices was truly inspiring. The annual Brick Development Association Brick Awards shortlist has been announced, and IG Masonry Support is proud to have supplied to nine of the shortlisted projects.

The Awards is one of the most prestigious brick architecture awards in the UK. It celebrates the very best examples of clay in the UK’s built environment and attracts a large number of exemplary projects from leading architects, housebuilders, developers, and contractors, across 17 categories.

BLOG | Rapid Evolution of Modern Masonry Techniques Improves Building Sustainability

A building product’s environmental credentials do not necessarily stand and fall on the amount of carbon it emits during use or in situ. Some solutions, such as brick slip lintels, and brick on soffit systems have evolved to speed up and simplify traditional construction techniques, an outcome that delivers significant sustainable benefits by reducing onsite labour times and cost. Kyle Alexander, Project and Engineering Manager at IG Masonry Support, highlights the additional ways in which its high-performance masonry support range helps projects meet environmental targets whilst facilitating evermore imaginative, attractive building designs.

Masonry is a classic and timeless building material that achieves superior, maintenance-free results. Utilising masonry in prominent areas can be essential to delivering an architect’s overall vision, or fulfilling a client’s brief to ensure a project remains in keeping with the local surroundings. Thanks to the evolution of brick slip lintel systems, for example, such design intentions can be achieved more effectively, rapidly and sustainably than ever before.

Time and energy saver

Brick slip systems are adaptable to suit any masonry-based application. They are particularly ideal for small openings over window heads and delivering effortless results spanning an entrance of a commercial building.

Creating intricate masonry details with prefabricated brick-slip solutions such as those supplied by IG Masonry Support results in an estimated 90%-time reduction in comparison to traditional on-site methods. As well as the time-saving factor, there are many other benefits associated with a brick slip system’s offsite production, from improved construction efficiencies and reduced on-site waste, through to minimal site impacts due to the fit-and-forget design.

Environmentally conscious approach

According to the Climate Change Council, the built environment contributes around 38% of the UK’s total carbon footprint. The construction industry needs to reduce emissions by 60% by 2030 and a further 10% by 2040 to meet the government’s Net Zero target. Hence, the building sector is taking an increasingly conscious approach when it comes to supplier and material selection.

Reliable and compliant with building regulations, IG Masonry Support’s brick on soffit system B.O.S.S A1 provides a perfect illustration of how sustainability and performance synergise in high-quality products. The prefabricated B.O.S.S A1 is supported by carbon neutral classification, which along with its A1 fire-rated finish, provides an ideal complement to its ability to create safe, spectacular brick soffits through fast, efficient installation. The unit’s lightweight composition is key to its easy handling; its composite material manufacture makes it 70% lighter than equivalent concrete units. This eliminates the need for mechanical lifting, thus a useful aid to ensuring building projects meet environmental targets.

Case study: The Canal Turn, Nottingham

The Island Quarter, a £650m mixed-use development in Nottingham, offers an ideal example of how the prefabricated nature of brick-on-soffit units is crucial to achieving complex design configurations safely, effectively, and sustainably. IG Masonry Support was selected to design and manufacture 19 Brick Slip Arches for the Canal Turn, the first of three building phases to be delivered for the Island Quarter project.

The greatest challenge in respect of the arches’ delivery was coordinating the brickwork design of two deep-soffit arches, which were required to meet at a 90-degree angle at the structure’s ground-level corner. To achieve this, a half-arch solution combined with a B.O.S.S A1 deep-soffit system, facilitated the return of brickwork on the arches’ soffit whilst completing obscuring unsightly steelwork. The prefabricated B.O.S.S A1 system ensured the Canal Turn corner arches were an identical fit, resulting in a finish that earned a praiseworthy testimonial from installing contractor Gareth Williamson, former Project Manager at Lee Marley Brickwork.

Speaking of the project, Lee said: “IG Masonry Support’s method of using stainless steel in the arches proved ideal in getting them to site and installed using safe working methods. The B.O.S.S A1 deep soffit units are so much lighter than other products on the market, making it a lot easier for the arches to be lifted into position. The arches look great and when the Canal Turn building’s lit up, it looks amazing.”

As the Island Quarter development demonstrates, the evolution of masonry support elements such as brick slip lintels and brick on soffit systems have become essential to expanding the use of one of the world’s oldest, most reliable building materials in evermore exciting – and less impactful – ways.

NEWS | Supporting rising construction stars with sponsorship of Skillbuild 2023

The Keystone Group has been announced as the main sponsor of SkillBuild 2023, the largest and longest-running construction skills competition in the UK.

The contest has support from four companies within the Keystone Group: IG Masonry Support, Keyfix, IG Lintels, and Keystone Lintels. Each brand will not only be lending their name to the competition, they will provide their industry-leading products to ensure entrants are well-equipped to showcase their skills.

Owen Coyle, Divisional CEO, Keystone Group said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring this year’s SkillBuild event. It’s a fantastic contest featuring talented apprentices and trainees of all ages. The construction industry is in real need of new, skilled recruits. SkillBuild provides an excellent platform to showcase new construction talent, as well as act as a catalyst to inspire others to take up tools and join the industry.”

Organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), SkillBuild pits entrants against each other in a contest involving 13 regional qualifying heats. The one-day events will test competitors on their technical abilities, time management, problem-solving and skills working under pressure. Winners from each qualifier will be invited to take part in the SkillBuild National Finals, taking place in November 2023.

Ten trade categories will be contested in SkillBuild: bricklaying, carpentry, joinery, painting and decorating, plastering, plastering and drywall systems, roof slating and tiling, stonemasonry, wall and floor tiling and furniture and cabinet making. Level 1 competitions are also available in wall and floor tiling and bricklaying.

A recent CITB  ‘Construction Skills Network’ (CSN) report states that nearly 225,000 additional workers will be required to meet UK construction demand by 2027. Despite the current economic challenges, the report states that demand for new recruits in the building industry will remain high.

The Keystone Group’s commitment to addressing the building industry skills shortfall includes the launch of ‘Keyskills’, a brand-new education initiative providing support to skill-up a new generation of bricklayers in UK and Ireland. The initiative, also involving Keystone Group’s IG Masonry Support, Keyfix, Keystone Lintels, and IG Lintels, showcases a wide range of construction methods through free training support and materials. It’s a generous offering that is designed to focus on relieving financial pressures on education establishments to allow extra funding for the development and recruitment of bricklaying training courses.

EVENT | Exhibiting at CABE Built Environment Conferences 2023

The Keystone Group is pleased to announce that its companies IG Masonry Support, Keystone Lintels, IG Lintels and Keyfix are exhibiting at the CABE Built Environment series of regional conferences for 2023.

The Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) is redefining its conference season, and is introducing six new events as part of its new Built Environme

nt Series. The CABE event programme consists of four major regional events across the UK, taking place in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Each event will showcase the expertise of both regional and national professionals, providing attendees with a valuable experience. Distinguished guest speakers from various disciplines will share their insights, engaging in topical discussions and interactive Q&A sessions. Moreover, participants will have the chance to network with industry professionals and suppliers during the trade exhibition, facilitating connections and collaboration.

The first event in the series will be Built Environment England, which will take place at the University of Salford on Tuesday 20th June, followed by Built Environment Wales at Cardiff Metropolitan University on 22nd June.

The Built Environment England Technical Conference will focus on themes of performance, compliance and safety. The discussion will look at key areas of the built environment sector, including the challenges presented by the journey to net zero carbon and the new duty holder regime. The event not only offers the opportunity to learn from a variety of speakers, attendees have the opportunity to explore the trade exhibition and network with other professionals. The event will conclude with the opportunity to tour the Energy House 2.0 facility developed by the University of Manchester. Energy House 2.0 is currently the largest test and research facility focusing on fuel-efficient technologies in Europe.
