The Hermione Dormitory Building has been designed by architect Henry J Lyons to achieve best practice in sustainability and be an exemplar development at Alexandra College.
Built by Clancy Contractors, the project provides a new dormitory building that accommodates 200+ students with facilities for sleeping, dining, and relaxing, along with laundry and storage areas. It also provides new IT-enabled senior and junior study halls and music practice rooms.
To leverage the dormitory’s aesthetic and facilitate its function to reinstate the college campus as an exciting environment filled with social and academic possibilities, IG Masonry Support was required to design and manufacture a package of our Welded Masonry Support, Brick Slip Lintels, B.O.S.S. (Brick on Soffit System).
Each Welded Masonry Support system fixed back to a concrete structure and was designed to suit cavity widths between 150mm and 200mm. Each system was supplied with A1 Fire-Rated Thermal Shims, Lock Washers and FAZ II 12/20 Fixings as standard and also incorporated slotted holes to enable the B.O.S.S. units to be easily bolted up to.
Each B.O.S.S. unit featured Ibstock’s White Engobe brick, which covers the majority of the façade in a stretcher bond soffit pattern. These units are prominent at ground floor level, creating a floating brick effect and focal point that wraps around the building entranceway. Our Brick Slip Lintels are also eye-catching and are prominent above each window head of the building.
Utilising our lightweight Welded Masonry Support and Brick Slip Systems resulted in a smarter, faster installation process for the brickwork contactor, specifically negating the need for mechanical lifting.
