Designed by East Lothian Council’s in-house architectural team and delivered by main contractor Morrison Construction and brickwork contractor Lesterose Scotland, Whitecraig Primary School opened in January 2026. Replacing a 1959 building, the new modern facility draws inspiration from the local village’s mining history with dark and glazed brick detailing.
IG Masonry Support was appointed by Lesterose Scotland to design and supply two Single Brick Arch Lintels and two Cavity Wall Arch Lintels for the project, helping to achieve the arch masonry detailing required as part of the architectural vision.
The Single Brick Arch Lintels spanned openings of 2260mm and 2485mm, both with a 1210mm rise, and incorporated lateral restraints and a 225mm cavity closer.
The Cavity Wall Arch Lintels also spanned openings of 2260mm and 2485mm, both with a 1210mm rise, supporting the full 435mm wall construction.
Each product was delivered to site ready for installation, enabling the surrounding brickwork to be completed efficiently. Once installed, the undersides of the Arch Lintels were painted by the site team to achieve the required aesthetic.
Whitecraig Primary School has been nominated in the ‘Education Building or Project’ category at the 2026 Scottish Design Awards, reflecting the inspiring architectural design of the building.
