The Altham, Blackhorse Lane

The Altham is a major mixed-use development in northeast London, designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and delivered by JJ Rhatigan & Co and Lee Marley Brickwork. The scheme replaces the former Standard public house with a contemporary co-living development that combines residential accommodation, commercial space, and a new cultural venue, while creating a strong architectural identity through stepped brick façades, continuous horizontal brick banding, and landscaped terraces.

IG Masonry Support delivered a coordinated façade support package across the development, supplying 2,267m of Welded Masonry Support, 2,260m of Cast-in Channel, and U Windposts installed at ground-floor level. Working closely with Lee Marley Brickwork and the wider project team, the masonry support package was carefully coordinated to suit the building’s stepped elevations, varying façade conditions, integrated building services, and structural interfaces, ensuring timely and accurate installation.

IG Masonry Support reviewed each stepped section of the façade individually, adjusting bracket layouts where required to suit the changing vent positions and stepped building profile. This ensured the masonry support could be installed accurately while maintaining consistent brick coursing and façade alignment throughout the development.

To accommodate the ventilation openings and fire barriers, the design team carefully coordinated bracket locations to avoid clashes with surrounding building services while maintaining the required structural performance. Close collaboration with the wider project team ensured these interfaces were resolved efficiently before manufacture and installation.

Each Welded Masonry Support system was engineered to follow the building’s complex geometry while integrating seamlessly with the adjoining straight masonry support runs. Careful detailing ensured the transition remained accurate and visually consistent across the façade.

At ground-floor level, three U Windposts were provided for lateral restraint around large openings while remaining fully integrated within the surrounding brickwork. This ensured the required structural stability was achieved without compromising the architectural appearance.
