Willen House

Designed by ECE Westworks and delivered by RED Construction Group Ltd and Titan Brickwork, Willen House combines the refurbishment of an existing building with structural alterations and a new extension. The building’s façade features brickwork with stone banding and GRC, creating a visually striking exterior that complements the surrounding conservation area.

IG Masonry Support supplied a fully coordinated masonry support package across the development, encompassing 613m of Welded Masonry Support on every floor – including corner units to wrap stone banding around balconies and projections – 16m of TITAN masonry support at ground floor and parapet levels to carry masonry loads and restrain stone elements, and 1,229m of Cast-in Channel providing adjustability and integration with the existing structure. Throughout the project, close collaboration with Titan Brickwork ensured our systems were compatible with both the façade design and the demands of combining new build with refurbishment.

To address variable structural backing, Cast-in Channel was installed wherever possible, providing the adjustability needed to interface safely with both steel and concrete frames. Where suitable steel was absent, resin fixings were used to ensure structural security.

For the varied cavities in refurbishment areas, bespoke Welded Shims and Top Hats were manufactured to ensure consistent alignment, allowing installation to proceed without replacement units and avoiding both programme delay and additional cost.

At the interface between new concrete extensions and the existing building, chemical FIS fixings were employed, drilled through steel plate and fixed into concrete, providing a reliable connection through mixed substrates without compromising design intent.

In the curved areas of the façade, masonry support systems were designed to follow the building geometry, with corner units customised on every floor from level 2 upwards to wrap stone banding continuously around balconies and projections.

At the window openings, a bespoke solution was developed to support both the stone at the head of the opening and the brick sill below, creating the appearance of a full brick encasement wrapping around each opening. Welded Masonry Support and TITAN units at sill and head levels ensured structural integrity and precise alignment across the curved façade.

Through bespoke engineering, adaptive installation solutions, and close coordination with Titan Brickwork, IG Masonry Support delivered a masonry support package that met the full complexity of the project, while also contributing to the drive to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating using our Passive House certified Welded Masonry Support system.
