Chobham Manor (Block 3EA)

Those lucky enough to own a property at Chobham Manor or any of the Park’s proposed residencies will not only be a short stroll away from Westfield Stratford City and its multitude of shops, restaurants, bars and cinemas, they will also be on the doorstep of one of the country’s finest sporting venues.

Due to our expertise in the design and prefabricated manufacture of brick slip systems, IG Masonry Support was selected to help deliver Block 3EA of the Chobham Manor development, which unlike other buildings in the complex, features an unusual double-tapered corner brick façade.

Block 3EA of the Chobham Manor development isn’t typical of other buildings within the complex as it features a non-standard, brick-cut design. For IG Masonry Support this meant reconfiguring the manufacture of our B.O.S.S (Brick on Soffit System) in order to accommodate blocks of double tapered corner bricks installed as full panels to complement curvature elements of the building.

Specialist providers of masonry support systems to suit a wide range of standard and non-standard applications, the Chobham Manor project nonetheless presented a challenge to our technical team. Our remit was to supply a brick soffit system that was robust enough to absorb the non-standard brick cut design whilst ensuring the brick was adequately secured to the unit itself. This was a far from straightforward task. Due to the shape of the brick, available bonding surface was reduced. Therefore, in order to adequately secure end bricks to the B.O.S.S unit, an innovative design solution was called for.

Despite the design challenges, IG Masonry Support was able to overcome the bonding issue and fully-secure the end bricks to the B.O.S.S unit. This was achieved by increasing the backing unit’s bonding surface area, ensuring each double-tapered brick was adequately adhered. In total, 513 B.O.S.S. systems, comprising pistol bricks were designed and manufactured for the Chobham Manor project including all brick cutting inhouse. In doing so, our technical team were able to achieve the architect’s vision for the building within the agreed timeframe; a feat that would not have been possible with hand-laid brickwork. This not only ensured the brickwork secured a striking aesthetic, the prefabricated B.O.S.S units reduced labour times and contributed to a cost-effective, less energy-intensive installation.
